With an average rate of 9.4 days per employee per year, sickness absence is a problem.
Using our award-winning assessment tool, Cari®, we assess people from day one. Cari® lets us see behind the Brave Face, giving us a picture that no other approach to absence management can provide. We understand what’s really going on, and give people the right support, early – helping prevent one day from turning into many.
Our neuroscience-based coaching helps people feel confident, capable and mentally ready to return to work, and enjoy being there.

“Seeing the improvements was fascinating – we went from 8% of people in the "significant risk/ill" quartile, to 0% – brilliant. And what we could ascertain from the data was that people were moving along the continuum, from ill to injured to reactive and to healthy. This wasn’t just great learning [to understand how the continuum works] but it also has empowered us as a business – we know when and how to take action!” FG, HR Director
Case Study
The organisation wanted to intervene earlier when someone was struggling or went off sick, rather than waiting for absence to become established.
Employees were assessed with Cari® from day one, helping identify what was really going on behind the Brave Face. They could then access focused NeuChem® coaching, with support tailored to what Cari revealed and where they were in their absence or return-to-work journey.
For some, that meant preventing a difficult day from becoming a longer absence. For others, it meant helping them feel ready and confident to return.
“"Work felt relentless and inescapable, but coaching showed me my best is good enough, and gave me simple tools to take positive action instead of feeling like a victim of circumstance.“ ”

Before one day becomes more.
“I just had to take a mental health day – didn’t think I could keep going – didn’t want to get out of bed. It was like, when I was falling asleep all I could think about was the work, like it was relentless. And I was thinking – I know what I’m like, I’m just going to fall apart or walk!” Asma’s Cari was a surprise to her, “I didn’t think [Cari] would be able to see exactly what was going on for me – it was so… strange! And the coaching, I was so grateful for that. Seriously. I can tell you I felt different immediately – I know it’s all this neuroscience, and that was super interesting, but it also made total sense to me. And I did go back into work. I wanted to, because I felt like, I’m the boss of my workload – it’s not the boss of me!” she gave a smile and then quietly said, “But seriously though, this was a big thing. I just see things different. I feel different. It’s good. Really good.
Getting back, and staying back.
Employees have been supported back into work with Cari Absence Recovery which was between 3 to 6 sessions. Zane told me, “I’d been off sick for some time and feeling pretty low. The longer I was off, the more isolated and anxious I felt. My first NeuChem session helped me to identify the difference between my fears and reality, why I always believe the worst case scenario and why this is usually built on assumptions.
"Following my return to work the coaching helped me to overcome my fears about how I reintegrate with the team and gave me simple physical exercises to help me cope and keep on track”
